Better Sound, Improved Image Quality – This Fall Is All About Major Video Upgrades

Following the recent introduction of manual exposure controls, external microphone support, and stereo sound – we are very pleased to announce that Dolby Vision HDR Video is now integrated in ProCamera!

DOLBY VISION: 10-BIT HDR VIDEO

ProCamera v14.1 is available worldwide and it includes support for 10-bit Dolby Vision HDR video recording on iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max!

The Dolby Vision video standard can record 700 million colors to make your clips more lifelike and vibrant. That’s 60 times more colors than in previous 8-bit video recordings! Until now, big film studios have adopted Dolby Vision HDR by making according adjustments in post production – the iPhone is the first camera capable of making these adjustments while recording.

On the latest iPhones, ProCamera will automatically record in HDR for frame rates up to 60fps (iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max) or up to 30fps (iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini).

We have also added a settings option to exclusively record standard, non-HDR 8-bit video on the latest iPhones (Settings > Video Quality > HDR Video: Off).

Since HDR video is such a big step for videography, there are some things to consider when adopting it at this point in time: You will need a proper HDR display (like the new iPhones have) to enjoy the increased dynamic range of HDR clips, some editing softwares are not (yet) capable of maintaining the HDR information, and your video portal of choice needs to be able to process HDR video files. YouTuber DailyTekk released an informative recap on the status quo of HDR video:

STEREO SOUND & EXTERNAL MICROPHONE SUPPORT

ProCamera Audiometer Stereo Sound Screenshot
Stereo Sound Video Recording: Audiometer shows L and R channel

STEREO SOUND

We think great audio quality is essential for professional videography. That’s why we have introduced stereo sound for video recordings in v14.0 (iPhone Xs and up). When recording clips in stereo, the Audiometer in our video info panel will show two separate audio channels.

EXTERNAL MICROPHONES

To push the audio quality even further, you may use external microphones when recording videos. We wanted to give you maximum flexibility, and that’s why ProCamera can now connect to a wide range of external bluetooth, lightning, and USB microphones – like Apple AirPods, Instamic Pro, Shure MV88+, Blue Yeti,…

Using external microphones with ProCamera

Our latest video tutorial shows you how to connect to and film with external microphones in ProCamera:

RECOMMENDED AUDIO EQUIPMENT

It’s easy to get lost in the wide range of available audio equipment for the iPhone, which is why we regularly test new hardware for you. These are the products we have used for our tutorial video above:

Use Instamic Pro Bluetooth Microphone with ProCamera

Instamic Pro* – The Instamic is a high-fidelity audio recorder that doubles as a waterproof bluetooth microphone (check video tutorial above to hear it and see how to connect it to your iPhone). It’s the microphone of choice of our team members – great build and sound quality, versatile, and compact!

*Disclosure: Affiliate link, which means we will earn a small commission – at no extra cost to you – if you click through and make a purchase. This allows us to continue testing new equipment and work on their integration into ProCamera for your added benefit.

Other recommended products: Shure MV88+ Video Kit (Lightning), Apple AirPods Pro (Bluetooth), and Apples USB-Lightning adapter to utilize compatible USB microphones like the Blue Yeti.

As with all new releases, if you find a bug or have a question then please let us know via in-app support or email us at support@procamera-app.com.

The underwater world is a magical place. Wouldn’t it be great to take photos with your iPhone in this beautiful landscape?

Last week we tried just that: We put an iPhone loaded with ProCamera inside an underwater housing and jumped into the Mediterranean Sea. Grab your snorkel and come with us!

All photos in this article were taken with an iPhone 7 Plus.

INFO: This is a follow-up post to our previous subsea iPhoneography article.

Besides the fancy water shoes, you will notice that the further away an object is, the more the warm tones get lost under water (see legs).

What equipment did you use this time?

We used an iPhone 7 Plus inside a Watershot Pro housing. The main benefits of a professional housing are the robustness and the underwater control. This means you don’t have to worry about penetrating water (depth rating of 195 feet/60 meters) and physical buttons allow you to reliably trigger the shutter button subsea.

An iPhone 7 Plus inside the Watershot Pro Kit.

How did you set up ProCamera before the dive?

The physical buttons allow you to control the most important features once the iPhone is inside the housing (shutter button, exposure correction, 1x – 2x zoom switch). Yet, some settings need to be entered before storing the iPhone in there:

Continuous Autofocus: Tap in the middle of ProCamera’s Capture Screen to activate. The switch to Continuous Autofocus is indicated by the larger blue reticle and the word “AUTO”. This way, the camera will continuously adjust focus and you are not limited to one fixed focusing distance. This setting is important, since you won’t be able to manually focus once the iPhone is inside the housing.

Aspect Ratio 4:3: Precise framing isn’t that easy under water due to shy and speedy objects, water movement and limited view. Therefore, we went for the maximum resolution (4:3) and cropped our favorite images afterwards.

Rapid Fire: For fish and other agile sea dwellers, our Rapid Fire settings can be quite useful. By holding down the shutter button, the camera will take a burst of photos. This will give you a variety of captures to choose from after the dive.

High image quality: The intrinsic properties of water make it harder to capture crisp and contrasty images. Most of the time, underwater photos need at least basic editing. To get as much image data as possible, set the JPEG/HEIF quality level to 100% or directly switch to TIFF file format.

Do you have more tips for people, who haven’t tried it before?

The most important tipps are already listed in the previous post. But these are additional things to consider:

– The housing is extremely solid and durable. Still, washing the case after a dive in the ocean is recommended, so that the clear front and the glass lens are freed from the layer of salt.

– When snorkeling, applying sun cream (to your back) is advisable. Just wait a few minutes before you touch the housing afterwards. Otherwise, you will cause unpleasant finger prints that obstruct your view at the iPhone display or you will put smudge marks on the lens.

– Try not to directly expose the housing to sand or tiny stones at the beach. The sand grains might scratch the acrylic front of the housing, which could affect the display visibility and the quality of selfies negatively. We put the kit inside a pouch in our beach bag before and after each dive and had no problems.

Can you spot the crab? Not all sea dwellers are flashy and bright, many are perfectly adapted to their habitat.

– Attach the little hand strap to the housing. You don’t want to loose your precious kit and all those wonderful water photos in crushing waves.

– If possible, snorkel or dive more than once. Within a day or even a few hours, an underwater scene can drastically change. You may encounter different wildlife and you may get an even clearer view. A spot that wasn’t very interesting on an afternoon, was fascinating just the next morning.

And last but not least: please take care down there!

As the holiday season is fast approaching, we compiled a list of personal product recommendations. We are constantly testing new photography tools and gadgets that go together well with ProCamera and smartphone photography in general.

These are our top 5 product tips for December 2016:

Polaroid Zip – Mobile Printer

Turning a unique moment into a physical object is always special. Not only can you preserve a beautiful instant, you may also share it with family and friends later on. Using the Polaroid Zip is a fun and easy way to get little instant prints directly from your iPhone. We know that you already took a ton of great photos with ProCamera, so why not print your favorites?

Recently, we also published an in-depth video review of the mobile printer.

The Polaroid printer is available in various colors on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2h661rK

Quad Lock Mounting System

The Quad Lock mounting system is integrated in a slim and compact smartphone case. It allows you to securely attach your iPhone to a tripod, bike, car window, etc.

For photography purposes, it’s key to have a secure and tight camera fixation. The Quad Lock system provides that, thanks to the universal Tripod Adaptor. The small and lightweight adaptor can be screwed onto any traditional tripod (1/4″ 20 thread). Using a Quad Lock case, you may then connect your smartphone to a tripod – horizontally or vertically.

The iPhone case comes in different dimensions, so please look for the right size that fits your iPhone generation.

The Quad Lock case and tripod adapter are available on Amazon:

Adapter > http://amzn.to/2gYhD1q

Cullman Tripod

Now that we have talked about a great tripod mount, the logical next step is suggesting an actual tripod. The definition of the “perfect tripod” always depends on your camera, intended shooting situation, and luggage/backpack capacity. Therefore, we came up with two suggestions: a full-blown tripod with an excellent price-performance-ratio, and a handy pocket-size stand.

The Cullman tripod offers everything you’d look for in a modern travel tripod: Decent max height and weight capacity, small packing size, fast leg adjustment (length & angle), ball head, and a lot more. Remember that you’ll need some sort of clamp or adaptor to attach your iPhone to a standard camera tripod (e.g. Quad Lock Adaptor or GripTight Mount mentioned in this list), since smartphones don’t have screw threads like traditional DSLR cameras.

The tripod is available on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2gHmqpT

Joby GPod Mini Magnetic

The smallest member of the renowned Gorillapod family comes with a special feature: The red magnetic feet hold on securely to metal surfaces. Just like its bigger brothers, the Gpod Mini features flexible leg joints, which makes it possible to use the tripod almost anywhere.

As an alternative for the cheap plastic-and-metal universal smartphone tripod clamps, Joby also offers an adjustable screw-on mount with secure rubber pads, which is also shown in the picture.

Both items are available on Amazon:
GPod Mini > http://amzn.to/2h6n2lA
GripTight Mount > http://amzn.to/2gYJaCm

ProCamera Privacy Sticker

ProCamera Privacy Sticker Set

Sometimes, it’s not about the capture, but about not being captured. With our brand new sticker set, you can easily block built-in cameras of smart TVs, smartphones, laptops, and tablets to protect your privacy. The stickers work on smooth surfaces without any glue or adhesive film (static cling adhesion), which means they can be applied and removed in no time. The set includes two sheets of stickers, which will give you a total of 22 stickers. Each sheet provides you with two different sticker sizes.

Happy shopping and enjoy experimenting!

Stand out from the crowd with our brand new ProCamera MacBook Stickers. Place one over the illuminated Apple logo on the lid of your MacBook and it will transform it into a luminous aperture.

Applying a sticker to the lid of your MacBook is fairly easy and only takes about 1 minute:

Carefully peel off the thick protective paper from the back of the sticker. It’s the paper layer with the grid printed on the back and can then be discarded.

When peeling of the paper layer, it’s important to make sure that all parts of the sticker (especially the aperture blades) stay on the thinner carrier film. If necessary, press both layers together and then softly pull them apart several times. The fine carrier film makes sure that all the independent parts of the sticker sit at the right place, have the correct distance from each other, and are at the right angles.

To be on the safe side, you may wipe clean the center area of your MacBook lid before applying the sticker in the next step.

The next step is pretty self-explanatory: Press the sticker against the lid of your MacBook, and slowly peel off the carrier film.

Just make sure that you place the sticker at the correct spot: So that the logo can literally glow in full splendor, all the open areas inside the sticker (e.g. between the aperture blades) need to be positioned on top of the white acrylic Apple logo. That way the light can shine through all these areas, forming the glowing ProCamera logo.

Tip: Having your MacBook running and flipped open helps positioning the sticker, as you can see the light of the then glowing Apple Logo shine through the free spaces of your sticker.

Customize your MacBook and make it reflect your love for mobile photography.

The stickers are made in Germany out of matt high quality vinyl and come in a pack of two.

We’d love to see our stickers on your MacBook, so feel free to post a photo of your workplace on our Facebook page.

The ProCamera MacBook Stickers are available exclusively at the ProCamera Online Shop.

Tonki – The Recycled Cardboard Photo Frame https://procamera-app.com/en/blog/tonki-photo-frame/ Thu, 03 Mar 2016 15:35:51 +0000 https://www.procamera-app.com/en/?p=44882 Tonkis are an innovative new way to print and frame your digital images from your iPhone. ]]>
Some time ago, we learned about a product named “Tonki”, which is created and patented by a group of young designers from Italy. Since we are always interested in cool new ideas in the field of mobile photography, we wanted to find out a little more about the product.

What is a “Tonki”?

A Tonki is a cardboard frame on which you can print every kind of square image. This distinguishes a Tonki from your everyday print and standard photo frame. After ordering your first print(s) from tonki.com – which also supports the import and use of your Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr photos – you will receive a flat sheet of printed cardboard.
With a few quick and easy steps, the flat sheet takes the shape of a frame with your photo right in the center. The nice thing about it is that you don’t need any extra tools to fold the recycled cardboard.
In the following video, you can see how the special cardboards are printed, mailed and assembled:

Although they print your photo directly on the typical havana cardboard, they still manage to achieve bright and colorful results. You should not, however, compare apples and oranges and expect museum-quality fineart outcomes – like you may have seen in $100+ original photo prints on aluminum backing. One Tonki currently sells for $12.99 (resp. 9.99€) plus shipping and is 10 x 10 inches in size.

Once you have fully assembled your print, you can decide whether you want to hang the photo somewhere on a wall or utilize the fold out stand.

We especially liked the idea of setting up a 2×2 or 3×3 photo grid on a blank wall, because the squares then form a visual unit and generate a nice symmetry.

From time to time we want to showcase cool and creative new ideas on our blog. Things that came as a pleasant surprise – in this case the Tonki prints. Yet, we are in no way affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed by Tonki S.r.l.

What do you think about these? Do you plan on ordering one for yourself or do you already own some?

Gray Card Calibration with ProCamera https://procamera-app.com/en/blog/gray-card-calibration-procamera/ https://procamera-app.com/en/blog/gray-card-calibration-procamera/#comments Fri, 20 Nov 2015 17:07:55 +0000 https://www.procamera-app.com/en/?p=41005 Using a gray card is a fast and easy way to set an accurate white balance. A proper white balance eliminates unwanted color casts. In this post we present the ProCamera Gray Card and show how quick and easy it is to do a "gray card calibration" inside the app.

Der Beitrag Gray Card Calibration with ProCamera erschien zuerst auf ProCamera + HDR - Turn your iPhone into a powerful digital camera.

]]>
Using a gray card is a fast and easy way to set an accurate white balance. A proper white balance eliminates unwanted color casts, so that, for example, skin tones are rendered more naturally and white objects remain a true white in your photos.

ProCamera has a built-in manual white balance feature, as well as an additional method for achieving white balance through what is called ‘gray card’ calibration. For this, the neutral tone of a gray card serves as the reference point for this calibration. It is important that the gray card is positioned in the same light as your actual subject. Once you have calibrated your white balance, which is performed by a simple long tap on the AWB button, the metered value is locked for continuous shooting until you tap the WB button.

Furthermore, a gray card can be used to adjust the white balance in post-processing software. By having the gray card visible in one of your shots, you will later be able to select a point or pixel on the gray card in your image editing software in order to set a custom white balance.

GrayCard

How to calibrate the camera with a gray card?

  • Enable WB control in control panel (icon with the three lines, bottom right). A button “AWB” appears on screen.
  • Put the gray card in front of the camera covering more than 50% of the viewfinder.
  • Make sure the gray card receives same or similar light as the subject you want to take a photo of.
  • Long press the “AWB” button. A confirmation pop-up shows up. The white balance is now calibrated to the neutral gray color.
  • All photos taken after the calibration will have a consistent white balance value.
  • Tap the “WB” button to unlock and activate automatic white balance.

ProCamera Gray Card

iPhone Photography has a lot to do with being mobile. So, we thought a gray card for ProCamera should be just as handy as the device itself. Eventually, we came up with a sturdy credit card-like product that fits in every pocket. Starting today, you can get your own ProCamera Gray Card in our brand new shop: https://shop.procamera-app.com/

basICColor Gray Card

In addition to our handy pocket size ProCamera Gray Card, we are also offering a bigger one, that measures approximately 175x263x3mm. It’s made by basICColor, a leading supplier of ICC based color management solutions for the digital workflow, and meets the highest standards.
It’s metamerism-free, which guarantees a neutral gray tone under different lighting-conditions. Besides the absolute accuracy, the card is water resistant, scratch resistant, and washable.
We are pleased to offer this professional tool in our online shop, too: shop.procamera-app.com

– Special Opening Offer –

When ordering before November 30, use the code “NOV15”: We are offering a special discount of 10 per cent during the remainder of the month, to celebrate the opening of the ProCamera Online Shop: shop.procamera-app.com

Fields of Applications

Your iPhone has an auto white balance setting, so you definitely won’t need a grey card for every single photo you take. However, there are many situations where you really care about getting the colors correct in camera. Getting the colors “correct” doesn’t necessarily mean more “pretty” – an intentional color cast may also enhance the effect of an image.

Bottom line: Sometimes, warm colors enhance a photograph, giving them a “feel-good” factor. Cold tones, too, can emphasize the impact or meaning of an image. However, if you want to showcase products for instance, natural color rendering is a key factor. In case you want to sell a white shirt online, the photo should be a true representation of the product – without a yellowish or blue-greenish color cast.

Last June, we interviewed Lars Wibranski who used only his iPhone and ProCamera to document his trip to Thailand. When he mentioned that he used a waterproof housing in conjunction with ProCamera to capture vivid underwater scenes, it really sparked our curiosity. Now, he has returned to share the photographs and tips from this dive.

First, let’s have a look at the special underwater housing. Called “Watershot® PRO”, it is purpose-built for the demands of underwater photography and is able to “withstand rocks, reefs, salt, and extreme pressure.” It comes equipped with two lenses (flat and wide-angle). The set cost roughly $200 at the time of purchase. The fact that this particular case is a perfect fit for the iPhone 5/5s means that it is not compatible with other generations of the iPhone, or with other smartphone brands. Nonetheless, it opens up new areas of exploration for underwater iPhone photography. For now, let’s go for a dive with Lars and see what he has captured.

All photos were taken with an iPhone 5 S and ProCamera.

The black dots on the clear front of the housing are the physical buttons, that assure reliable operation subsea.

Underwater images usually aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about iPhone photography. One might think that special equipment that costs thousands of dollars would be necessary. Yet, the photographs below are evidence of just how far mobile photography can be pushed. Lars has shared with us some great tips in case you too wish to give underwater photography a try:

  • When (first) using the case, it’s best to make a quick security check. Put in a handkerchief, close the housing, and submerge it into water. The handkerchief must not become wet while in the case. Lars never had any problems with penetrating water.

You will achieve the best photo results…

  • in clear water. If you can’t see a lot underwater with your own eyes, the camera is likely to not see a lot, too. Thailand, where Lars took these photos, has incredibly clear water.
  • near water surface, since it’s a lot brighter there. However, some of these photos are taken at around 40-50 feet (12-15m) below the surface. So don’t let that limit you.
  • close to your subject. The closer you can get, the crisper your photos will be.

Blue-Green Cast

  • The deeper you dive, the bluer and greener your environment will appear. This is bound up with the intrinsic property of water and the fact, that white light is selectively absorbed and scattered when traveling trough water.
  • You will gradually loose red and orange tones in your photos when going deeper. You can see that effect in the following photo of the clown fish (we all know that Nemo is orange…).
  • With a White Balance adjustment, you can compensate by adding in warm tones. Strictly speaking, the White Balance is only correct for a certain depth. Since you can’t unpack your iPhone underwater and can’t use the touchscreen in conjunction with the housing, it’s best to try find an approximate value beforehand. Alternative ways of bringing back the reds are either additional lighting (dive lights) or screw on color filter (red filter for blue water, magenta filter for green water environments).
  • Since you won’t be able to use the touchscreen, when your iPhone is packed into the housing, make sure you don’t lock focus beforehand. When your focus is locked in ProCamera, you will see a little lock symbol inside the focus reticle. Using the big focus reticle in the center of the viewfinder assures continuous focusing, which will give you the necessary flexibility underwater.
  • It’s quite possible that you will see amazing things underwater. It’s a strange and stunning world down there – but it can also be a dangerous one: Mind the sea current, even when having beautiful motifs in front of your camera.
When exploring reefs and shorelines with sharp edged rocks, watch out for breaking waves.
  • The housing also comes with a lanyard, which helps avoid loosing your phone underwater.
  • However, the underwater world is not just beautiful and dangerous, it’s also fragile. So please take nothing but pictures from this important ecosystem.
  • Remember that low battery alert at 20%? It’s a useful information, but it can abruptly stop your underwater photography. Only by tapping the “Dismiss” button in the center of the screen, you can continue using your phone. Unfortunately, there is no way to tap that button when your phone is inside the housing (no physical button in the center of the screen) and there is no option to disable that info pop up in iOS.
So, charge your iPhone to 100% beforehand, that will give you more than enough for an extended dive.

The wide screw on lens gets softer in the corners, so make sure you place your main subject more around the center. In this area the optical quality of the lenses is really good – Lars even used the housing in conjunction with the screw on lens for onshore photos, because of the wide field of view.

Maybe we could encourage some of you to give underwater (iPhone) photography a try. With ProCamera, some kind of waterproof cover/housing, and the tips from this post, you are ready to go. There also is a new version of the housing, that is custom made for the dimensions of the iPhone 6.

We at ProCamera love to see our app in action. So, in case you are doing something special, write us an eMail. We are very curious!

Here at ProCamera we’re always on the look out for products that enable photographers to take better photos with their iPhone. The new Covr iPhone case does exactly that by helping street shooters remain discreet so they can capture natural, candid street photographs.

Created by award winning photojournalist Thomas Hurst, the Covr case has a built-in lens that slides to change the viewing direction. Now you can hold the phone flat in your hand and shoot what’s in front of you. No more lifting the phone and giving away that your trying to take a picture.

We contacted Thomas about the Covr lens and were surprised to find out that he’d already been testing it ProCamera 7! He said that it helped him with control over the exposure levels when shooting. He also kindly sent through a screencap of what it looks like to currently shoot through Covr with the app (below). You can see that Thomas is using the Square aspect ratio and Live Data to help him shoot. You can also see that the lens currently flips the image upside down on ProCamera 7. Note* We are currently talking to Thomas and the Covr team about how we can add support (flip the image) for the case into the app.

Head over to the Kickstarter page to support the project. You can get your hands on one for US$55.

Since we released of ProCamera 7 in September last year we’ve received a number of reviews of the app from all around the world. We thought we’d consolidate a few of our favorite quotes and links into a short list. Thank you to all the writers below for taking the time to review the app.

United States

“The app can take you from shooting your photo all the way to editing and sharing. Many apps do that, but the number of features and the slick execution of those features make ProCamera 7 a standout.”

Mel Martin – ProCamera 7 for iPhone offers some compelling new features for TUAW

“I’ve been thoroughly enjoying ProCamera 7 for the past few days for my iPhone photographs, and I believe that it’s worthy of being on most home screens for powerful photo capture. If you’re a serious iPhone photographer, and need an app that can do it all, then ProCamera 7 should be at the top of your list.”

Christine Chan – Get A Beautiful And Powerful Photo Capture And Editing Experience With ProCamera 7 for AppAdvice

United Kingdom

“Building on the good reputation of its predecessor, ProCamera 7 is clearly then another highly recommended photography app, which extends the functionality of your iPhone’s camera significantly with an impressive collection of quality features and stylish filters.”

Nick Spence – ProCamera 7 for iPhone, iPad review – Feature packed follow up to well reviewed original for MacWorld UK

“And talking about getting the most out of our phone, the ProCamera 7 has been redesigned almost from the ground up. With the aim of making everything easier and faster, the user interface has been reworked. Most notably you can see the hint of the iOS7 flat design everywhere you look. Some of the advanced functionality has been move around to make it easily more accessible and less cluttered.”

Chris Prakoso – ProCamera 7 – The iPhone Camera App Every Passionate Mobile Photographer Must Have for Moblivious

Germany

Pierpaolo Pernici ProCamera 7 Review for Fotofonia

Ukraine
