For this guest article, we invited visual artist and art educator Lance Hewison to talk about his approach to mobile photography and how he finds inspiration in everyday life:

As a photographer it’s not easy to get a unique, visually striking shot. It’s usually only 1 in a 100 photos that have that special something, and that’s a rather generous estimate for me personally.

I recently took a trip to the city of Heidelberg in southern Germany. It was a mild and sunny January afternoon, so I wandered around, coffee in hand, and admired the beautiful architecture and charm the city possesses.
As I always have my iPhone handy, I decided to use ProCamera to take some shots. I snapped lots of photos of the city’s most impressive sights. Although the details of the churches and town squares looked great in the photos, the images were nonetheless a bit predictable and didn’t really say anything interesting. I felt that anyone could have easily snapped the same photo.

The Old Bridge is one of the most popular sites in Heidelberg, where hundreds of tourists flock per day to enjoy the stunning views across the Neckar River. On this particular day at sunset, there were at least a dozen people standing at various spots along its length, some alone and others in small groups, most of them snapping selfies with an outstretched hand. A few of the others had big professional DSLR cameras mounted on tripods, and they appeared concerned with capturing a precise composition of the landscape over the water.
As I paced up and down the bridge looking for inspiration, I became interested in the tourists and how they were an integral component of this environment. However, I wondered how I could snap pictures of complete strangers without invading their privacy. I certainly didn’t want to ask them if I could take their photo, because the moment you do that people stop being natural and tense up in a forced smile, or a big scowl if they don’t wish to be photographed. By pure chance, I noticed a small grid made of tiny square mirrors glued to one of the bridge’s lampposts. I have no idea how it got there, but I was intrigued with the effect it might have on my photos.
Out of curiosity, I placed my iPhone lens close to the mirrors. In Auto Mode, the camera focused on the nearest object—the tiny mirrors. The people and landscape, on the other hand, were blurred. I wanted the opposite effect, so I needed to have more control over the focus reticle. I dragged the focus reticle directly out from the center of the screen and onto different areas of my composition until the mirrors became blurred and the tourists and surrounding environment came into sharp focus. Because I had great late afternoon light and clear skies, it wasn’t necessary to adjust my exposure levels much at all. To make small adjustments, however, I tapped the +/- symbol to reveal the exposure slider and adjusted the exposure level with the swipe of my finger. I used the dark edges of the lamppost as a device to divide up my composition and frame my subjects. These out-of-focus borders created wonderful effects that I hadn’t anticipated and gave a unique, collagelike twist to the photos. If I didn’t tell you about these little square mirrors attached to the lamppost, you might wonder how I got this effect. I like that sense of ambiguity in a photograph—where it isn’t exactly clear what’s going on.
In a nearby café, I began to pick my favorite photos from the bunch and deleted those I knew I wouldn’t use. In the camera roll, I was able to conveniently swipe my finger across entire rows of photos I wanted to send to the trash. I then applied crops to the photos that remained, really focusing in on just the most interesting part of the composition. ProCamera always makes a copy when you edit and keeps your original photo untouched, so there was no worry that I would ruin anything—I could always start over from scratch if I was unhappy with the saved edit. Next, I went into the Tools function and used only the Curves tool to increase the contrast in each scene. Personally, I like rich, deep shadows for a more dramatic effect. One last touch I added to each photo was to adjust the color temperature so that the photos appeared slightly warmer overall since this bright blue sky provided plenty of cool tones already. I enjoyed the convenience of being able to snap, edit, and share my photos all without leaving the app.
People sometimes ask me where I find inspiration. Instead of looking for something specific, I try to take my time and simply observe what’s around me. That way the moment of inspiration happens more naturally. It simply comes to you. I also look into my camera roll from time to time and ask myself—does this image really excite me? If not, I go ahead and delete it.
Less is more, so I try to focus on quality over quantity. The unexpected is elusive and not always easy to find, but when I slow down and take the time to really look around, I often discover a little detail or particular angle to help bring a more artistic edge to the photo. It’s far better in my opinion to have 10 interesting shots, even if they’re a bit odd, versus 100 that look like something you could find from a quick google search of the word “Heidelberg”. The element of surprise doesn’t have to be over the top, but it’s a necessary ingredient in creating a photo that looks more uniquely
yours.

A few weeks ago, we started a photo experiment in collaboration with C 41 Magazine. The idea behind the project was to give 5 strangers from different backgrounds an iPhone with ProCamera and see what they come up with…

In this post, we only display a small selection of the photos, that have been taken in the last couple of weeks. Each of the photographers had their own thematic focus and photographic approach. Therefore, it’s really interesting to check out the whole series of photos to find out how the captures here fit in with the general context.

LowLight Plus – ProCamera Instagram Challenge

First of all, we want to thank everybody who participated in our June 2016 Instagram challenge. It was great to see new #lowlightplus photos roll in from all around the globe on a daily basis. Feel free to continue using the hashtag for your favorite photos shot in LowLight Plus camera mode and remember to tag us with @procamera_app.

In the meantime, the ProCamera Jury has had a look at each individual submission, and these are the final winners:

First Place: Outstanding night time capture, which demonstrates that motion blur can be used as a powerful design element. A reminder for ourselves, that we don’t always have to go for those tack sharp images. Panning shots require a combination of experience, luck and perseverance – and in this case all three factors really came together. Very well done!

Second Place: Beautiful Mt. Fuji just before sunrise. The first rays of sunlight start to hit the top of the volcano, while the city still lies asleep. Sometimes, getting up early is a good idea!

Third Place: This one was taken after sunset and is a prime example of the capabilities of ProCamera’s LowLight Plus camera mode. A few years ago, a photo like this would have required a big and expensive DSLR camera. Now, all you need for this fits in your pockets: A litte smartphone tripod + an iPhone running ProCamera. Everything comes together in this photo: Composition, exposure, sharpness, and editing. After seeing it, I immediately wanted to experience the view from the Shard myself.

Besides our top 3 participants, we also want to mention Michael VanVooren’s extensive LowLight Plus test series, which he documented on Instagram. He used LowLight Plus in really dark environments and created great comparison photos.

Michael was also able to capture a beautiful halo around the moon, which was caused by tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere:

Today is the day ProCamera, in partnership with EyeEm, is going to announce the winners of the “Shots Of The Year 2014 Award“. In contrast to the theme of “simplicity”, selecting the 12 winning submissions wasn’t an easy task for the jury.
Crucial factors for the final choices were the connection to the theme, the photographic proficiency, the variety of genres and that certain something.
It was important to us that simple doesn’t have to mean boringeasy or ordinary in this context.

“Simplicity boils down to two steps: Identify the essential. Eliminate the rest.”
– Leo Babauta

Congratulations to our final winners! We have seen a lot of great photography in the course of SOTY2014!

53899635-3142045

Anne Østerby @anneoesterby

The Jury says: “A perfect synthesis of the concept of simplicity. The bold white lines lead the eye into the composition towards the figure. The interaction between the human being and his environment creates a reflective mood. There is a calm attitude to the photograph, yet the eye remains engaged with the twisting, sinuous quality of the lines surrounding the man.”

453428_55439148

Elaine Taylor @sunflowerof21

The Jury says: “Pure Simplicity. A rock in the middle of a flat landscape. The kids are playing with their kites in the sunlight, but the tension of the dark clouds is already in the air.”

Jamie @jamiefang

The Jury says: “There is a futuristic quality here that is exciting. Because the artist has rotated the photgraph 180 degrees, the viewer is confronted with a city scape that is not immediately recognisable. The photographer has given us just enough to be intrigued. Nothing is over stated. The thick fog which shrouds the city further adds to the sense of mystery. Where are we? In which year are we? These are some of the questions I asked myself when I looked at the photo. And I really like photos that get me asking questions.”

15103217_56058250

Pramudiya @pramudiya

The Jury says: “Perfection – absolutely geometric composition with a man in the center. Images like this are based on a visual concept – with smartphones it is also possible to search and find or create sceneries spontaneously.”

Youngduk Ko @guitarlogy

The Jury says: “This one completely captivated me. I think it’s because we do not see the face of the figure. What does this person look like? What is the expression on the face? Where are they going? We will never know. The extreme contrast between the hooded figure and the surrounding shadows of the city creates a dynamic composition. The warm, rusty colour of the jacket is set off beautifully against the dark colours of the city contained in the background.”

11875869_55893926

Thomas Lim @thomaslim24

The Jury says: “Simple yet captivating. Reduced but very dynamic. Great interplay between the dove, the ground and the shadow. Capturing moments like this demand a good eye for photography as well as great control over the camera. Even more when using a smartphone camera.”

55250323-16614621

Sebastian Frank @sebseven

The Jury says: “Architecture as a three-dimensional art form. The concrete seems to be in motion. Splendid composition.”

Snev Rotbok @eyecircus

The Jury says: “Pure simplicity achieved through basic shapes and gradients. Everyday objects used to create an almost surreal scenery.”

55191696-1974220

Dave Ballering @abstractdave

The Jury says: “A beautiful example for the high definition of modern smartphones and the play with depth of field on an iPhone.”

56172514-13860365

Mariko @MKlug

The Jury says: “Perfectly captured, composed and edited macro photograph, that will look beautiful as a large-size print!”

Glenn Homann @glennhomann

The Jury says: “Artistic abstraction in the composition and a proper editing lead to this intriguing photograph. It’s a great example for obscuration in today’s smartphone photography.”

Michelle Robinson @michmutters

The Jury says: “The vibrancy of nature expressed through a silhouette and geometric patterns. The sunlight reveals the living structure of the leaf.”

Thank you for participating in “Shots Of The Year 2014” — you gave us the impression the year 2014 was special for many of you!

ProCamera, in partnership with EyeEm, is proud to announce the shortlist of the „Shots Of The Year 2014 Award“. After taking a close look at nearly 1500 submissions, the jury selected 100 photographs in a multi-stage process.
On Wednesday (February 11, 2015) the 12 jury favourites will be presented. These photographs will be printed professionally at a large size and sent to the winners around the world.
The high number of outstanding photographs in the different categories (People, Animals, Nature, Street, Objects, Color, Black&White, HDR) not only showcases the variety of genres and motifs but also reveals the possibilities of today’s mobile photography.

While reviewing the submissions we came across some special photographs that weren’t as connected to the topic of „simplicity“ as the ones displayed today — nonetheless they are too good to hold back, so we will dedicate a separate blogpost to that matter.

The convincing quality of the SOTY2014 entries made us think about others ways to showcase a special collection of photographs. We will get in contact with selected photographers shortly. Have an eye on our blog for news on that project in the near future.

The Jury consisted of:

EyeEm judges
Gen Sadakane, Co-founder & Creative Director
Lucy Pike, Photo Editor
Severin Matusek, VP Community

ProCamera judges
Jens Hedtke, Photographer & Lead Designer
Lance Hewison, Visual Artist & Art Educator (Academy of Art University, San Francisco)

Thanks to all who participated in this special event!

As a mobile photographer, show us how you have personally explored the concept of simplicity. For our latest ProCamera 7 update we have added direct sharing to EyeEm – one of the world’s largest mobile photography communities with millions of members in over 150 countries.

For those that have EyeEm installed you will find the new icon (bottom right) on the Share screen in the Camera Roll or Lightbox. Here’s a quick guide:

Step 1

Select a photo in your Camera Roll/Lightbox and click on the Share icon (bottom-left).

Step 2

Select the EyeEm ‘E’ icon (bottom-right).

Step 3

Clicking the icon will load the photo directly into EyeEm’s edit screen ready for filtering, cropping and tagging.

For those that don’t have EyeEm installed we encourage you to visit EyeEm.com to learn how you can join, discover and even get paid for sharing your photos on their Marketplace.

EyeEm is one of the few photo apps that lets you upload and view photos in different size formats.  It also features a brand new EyeZoom function where you can explore the details of a photo in full screen with a single tap.

To celebrate our collaboration EyeEm is also featuring 20 talented ProCamera X EyeEm photographers on their blog.

Do you share your photos on EyeEm? Share your feed with us below.

ProCamera 7 is available from the Appstore for US$2.99 (30% off) for a limited time.
